I thought it was gonna be Saddam down there
Bruh, I had a phone with an infrared blaster for television. The moment fairphone comes out with something that works with a graphene. I’m in.
Let’s not forget our dearly departed SD Card slot.
I wanted to add more space to my stuff, too.
I’ve had a Sony phone for my last 2 phones, so quite some time. Great units, WITH that delicious headphones jack AND microSD slot. Praying to the phone gods that this continues.
The Motorola Moto G (at least for now) also has both
I came across my 25 year old still working (presumably because who knows these days) Etymotic buds in the lil case in my draw the other day, and had a sad face :(
I remember bugging them, paid a high price and justified it by telling my self they will last decades. Little did I know much of that time would be spent im their case, in the draw :(
Get a Galaxy Xcover 6 Pro. They have removable batteries, a 3.5mm audio jack, SD card slot, and a SIM card slot. I’ve had mine for about 3 years now it’s a big reliable brick of a phone that I hope might last at least another 3 years or more. The only downside is that it’s only compatible with Android (that I know of).
Current phone is my first without it. Couldn’t find a small enough phone with one - I don’t care about specs, but phones aren’t made for human hands any more.
She got down on hands and knees
One ear against the ground
Hoping to hear something
But the dirt made not a sound tonight
-from a song I’ve listened to countless times through my phone’s aux jack
…the dirt whispered, ‘Child, I’m coming home.’
Love that band. Love that album.
Remember when they first made the change and all over social media you had the fake videos of people showing you how to drill into your phone because – “The jack is still there guys! promise”
I was so happy when I gave up on graphene and went back to a cheap moto g that has a headphone jack. The dac is surprisingly mediocre, for an audio snob.
Sony phones have headphone jacks. I’m typing this on my Sony phone which has a headphone jack.
My Motorola does too. I’m liking it so far.
The headphone wire also serves as a FM radio antenna. You can’t get that with wireless headphones or a connection via the USB jack.
I haven’t listened to FM radio in probably 8-9 years. It’s literally nothing but ads with a few minutes of the most commercial music shoved down your throat 12 times a day
You don’t have community radio where you’re at?
On AM stations yeah. Not FM though.
AM is a while different beast, and there aren’t any phones with AM receivers.
Oh bummer. I’ve got 2 good community stations plus CBC on FM in my area
I agree that most radio stations are shite. Fortunately, I live in Ireland, which still has publicly funded broadcasters. I have my phone permanently tuned to Lyric FM, which plays classical music with almost no commercials.
I think they’re joking about earbud wires catching AM radio signals and giving spooky whispers
I don’t think they’re joking at all… what they said is true. If the phone has an FM receiver then the wired headphones do serve as the antenna for it. It will not work without wired headphones.
Back in the day that was a good way to have free music over the air if you didn’t have an unlimited data plan, which most people didn’t.
It’s just obsolete tech now. Having a headphone jack doesn’t mean anything if the phone doesn’t have an FM receiver. Most phones don’t have an FM chip in them anymore.
Having a headphone jack doesn’t mean anything if the phone doesn’t have an FM receiver.
It means I can connect my phone to my car stereo without a bunch of fucking dongles.
My current phone is Samsung XCover 4. It’s a fairly newish rugged phone; still has a FM receiver.
They just said it can’t be recreated with USB which you can definitely do
No you can’t… at least not easily or cost effectively.
It’s not just the wire on the headphones, it’s how an analog jack works. A 3.5mm audio jack routes raw analog signal through a direct electrical connection. USB doesn’t not. Without the raw analog signal, the FM receiver can’t do anything with it.
You need extra hardware like an analog pass through to get USB to handle analog radio signals. And that’s expensive and bulky for no benefit over an audio jack which is compact and dirt cheap.
Respectfully, you don’t know what you’re talking about here.
Sounds like I can do it with a chain of ten different adapters. Sold!
I’m not disagreeing that the FM radio circuit being directly connected to the trs connector is how phones worked for decades, I’m just saying that they said you couldn’t get FM radio over usb, so I assumed they must not be talking about literally receiving FM radio to the computer because obviously you can use SDR over usb. Maybe I’m just too autistic to appreciate what they were trying to say, but the interpretation I had from their comment was that killing TRS removed the ability for your phone to receive radio even including over usb, which is demonstrably wrong. But yes, your phone receiving the raw analogue signal through the TRS connector and using its dedicated radio circuit is in fact a thing, and almost certainly the better way to do it.
My Motorola has an FM receiver app. You can scan and save your favorite stations and save them separately for different cities. You can even record audio. I’ve used it in places where reception sucks for streaming from my home server. And if you don’t want to use the headphones, you can switch to speaker or BT and still use the wire as an antenna.
Didn’t they remove the minijack port to make newer phones waterproof?
I don’t think so, unless they forgot how they used to make older phones waterproof whilst still having ports on them.
Mine (Galaxy Xcover 5) has a headphone jack on it, but is marketed as a “waterproof rugged smartphone”, or essentially a “tradesman’s phone”. Basically you can fill it with dust and water and paint and sand and drop it off a tall ladder into a bucket of water. Oh, and you can replace/swap out the battery too.
Anyway, my suspicion is that any company saying they need to take ports off or stop you removing the battery “for waterproofing reasons” are not being entirely truthful.
They can probably do it easier and cheaper by taking away features, but they could still do it if they wanted.
Surely you mean to make more money by selling Bluetooth earbuds… the Motorola Defy was waterproof and it had a headphone jack.
A set of (acceptable) wireless earbuds costs about £25.
The main disadvantage is that if one falls out, it’s not tied to you with a bit of wire…
I use a Beats Flex, the buds are tied together and it has even better battery life since it has more space for battery. The individual buds are a trap!
ifWhen one falls outftfy
I use ultra cheap ones from aliexpress. They work fine. But yes. Falling out is the ultimate fate of all of them.
I personally couldn’t give less of a fuck if my phone was waterproof. That’s literally never been a problem for me. The only time it would have been I had it in a dry box so it was fine. I use my aux jack every day. Thankfully Motorola still had an option when I replaced my last phone. Although I did have to give up having a removable battery and the IR blaster(which actually would have been handy a couple weeks ago).
Every one of the phones I use (Poco X5 Pro running crDroid, Poco X3 NFC & OnePlus N10 5g running Ubuntu Touch), plus the phones I got for my wife & kiddo (Motorola Moto G Stylus, Redmi Note 7) have headphone jacks. The option is still there if you want it, you just need to seek it out.
2025 Motorola 5G Stylus.
Has aux port and SD card slot
And a stylus
That’s the one I got precisely for those reasons.
The shitty part is that the screen was advertised by LG themselves as an HDR display and once I got it it’s not HDR in any sense of the word. If I used my phone to watch stuff besides the odd tiktok I would have been very pissed and returned it.
Yeah me too, but I didn’t notice the hdr thing, I also don’t watch much on my phone as a main screen for anything visually interesting.
