I get the sentiment, but I’m trying to carry on with the times.

One of my best purchases in recent years is a Bluetooth DAC/Amp with a headphone out. I think it’s a good compromise - I’m not committing to just one set of headphones/earphones, it has (to my ears) better sound quality than my last phone with 3.5 mm out (the better circuitry more than makes up for the loss of quality of Bluetooth - which I’m probably not going to perceive in the outside noise anyway), I can use it plugged in over USB-C too if I want. It even has a replaceable battery (!!). The only downside over traditional Bluetooth headphones is that I don’t have ANC.

I used to carry a dedicated audio player some years ago and it was fine for what it was - press play, shove it in my pocket and carry on; but with a phone that I take out and back in all the time the wired approach doesn’t work, especially with most earphones having a cable barely long enough to reach my pocket.

Kept my galaxy s8 to use as a DAP. It does everything I need it to but I’m unsure if that phone will be on google’s lockdown list happening soon. Fuck google for that.

Bruh, I had a phone with an infrared blaster for television. The moment fairphone comes out with something that works with a graphene. I’m in.

I’ve had a Sony phone for my last 2 phones, so quite some time. Great units, WITH that delicious headphones jack AND microSD slot. Praying to the phone gods that this continues.

Didn’t know there was anyone still doing that. I assume no removable battery? Any pre installed bloatware?

Lots of Chinese phones definitely do IR blaster, dual SIM and SD card. I don’t think the headphone jack is as common since it steals a lot of room for something that most people actually do not use or want.

Current phone is my first without it. Couldn’t find a small enough phone with one - I don’t care about specs, but phones aren’t made for human hands any more.

As someone with hands on the bigger side I still find today’s phones too big. My current one is like 6.8" (I chose it for other reasons and the size was a compromise); if I have the choice, I’d go for 6" at most.

I was gonna say, I personally love big phones for that reason. The puny ones are so hard to do anything on.

I came across my 25 year old still working (presumably because who knows these days) Etymotic buds in the lil case in my draw the other day, and had a sad face :(

I remember bugging them, paid a high price and justified it by telling my self they will last decades. Little did I know much of that time would be spent im their case, in the draw :(

She got down on hands and knees

    One ear against the ground

    Hoping to hear something

But the dirt made not a sound tonight

The headphone wire also serves as a FM radio antenna. You can’t get that with wireless headphones or a connection via the USB jack.

I haven’t listened to FM radio in probably 8-9 years. It’s literally nothing but ads with a few minutes of the most commercial music shoved down your throat 12 times a day

I agree that most radio stations are shite. Fortunately, I live in Ireland, which still has publicly funded broadcasters. I have my phone permanently tuned to Lyric FM, which plays classical music with almost no commercials.

I don’t think they’re joking at all… what they said is true. If the phone has an FM receiver then the wired headphones do serve as the antenna for it. It will not work without wired headphones.

Back in the day that was a good way to have free music over the air if you didn’t have an unlimited data plan, which most people didn’t.

It’s just obsolete tech now. Having a headphone jack doesn’t mean anything if the phone doesn’t have an FM receiver. Most phones don’t have an FM chip in them anymore.

No you can’t… at least not easily or cost effectively.

It’s not just the wire on the headphones, it’s how an analog jack works. A 3.5mm audio jack routes raw analog signal through a direct electrical connection. USB doesn’t not. Without the raw analog signal, the FM receiver can’t do anything with it.

You need extra hardware like an analog pass through to get USB to handle analog radio signals. And that’s expensive and bulky for no benefit over an audio jack which is compact and dirt cheap.

Respectfully, you don’t know what you’re talking about here.

I’m not disagreeing that the FM radio circuit being directly connected to the trs connector is how phones worked for decades, I’m just saying that they said you couldn’t get FM radio over usb, so I assumed they must not be talking about literally receiving FM radio to the computer because obviously you can use SDR over usb. Maybe I’m just too autistic to appreciate what they were trying to say, but the interpretation I had from their comment was that killing TRS removed the ability for your phone to receive radio even including over usb, which is demonstrably wrong. But yes, your phone receiving the raw analogue signal through the TRS connector and using its dedicated radio circuit is in fact a thing, and almost certainly the better way to do it.

My Motorola has an FM receiver app. You can scan and save your favorite stations and save them separately for different cities. You can even record audio. I’ve used it in places where reception sucks for streaming from my home server. And if you don’t want to use the headphones, you can switch to speaker or BT and still use the wire as an antenna.

Remember when they first made the change and all over social media you had the fake videos of people showing you how to drill into your phone because – “The jack is still there guys! promise”
