Steam did basically invent the digital games marketplace, but that’s not a bad thing in my eyes. It brought games to many many more people, and helped make the industry what it is today. Without Steam, PC gaming might still just be an obscure hobby, and there might not be many games there at all. People forget what it was like before Steam, console gaming was extremely more popular than PC gaming. Like the numbers aren’t even close.

PC Games up to 2003 (Steam release date) were like: SimCity, Age of Mythology, Neverwinter Nights, Civ 3, Zoo Tycoon, Baldur’s Gate, Unreal Tournament.

Notice what these games genres and playstyle is like. You had to use a mouse and keyboard because game controllers didn’t even plug into your PC, even Microsoft Xbox used proprietary connectors not USB. My computer didn’t even have an USB port back then. The games had to be basically completely remade for PC, and game dev tooling was bad, so most didn’t bother porting at all. “Console-type games” were rare or extremely delayed PC releases.

This all changed after Steam made PC gaming popular, especially with the Orange Box. I remember thinking Steam was stupid back in the day. Like why do I have to make a dumb account just to use the CD I bought? And the interface was hot garbage. But of course it got better over time.

I had 1 tomato plant that made 4 huge tomatoes per day. I had to prop it up from sagging, it was a monster. It was great though, I made so many tomato based meals, that one plant basically fed my whole family for months. All I did was, good soil, in a pot, watering it every day, in a sunny but not burn-y location. I think that’s all plants though, and I know my advice is equivalent to “draw the rest of the owl”, but gardening really is just doing the basics very well

This was true back when the economy was vague and vibes based and people kind of just died and it was ok. But now we have pensions, and it’s considered unacceptable for people to starve to death and economies to collapse, so an upside down pyramid starts to get wobbly rather than “self-resolving”.

Reminds me of that Rick and Morty episode with the perfectly level floor. At a certain point in reality you also would need perfect tools to check if something is perfect. Measuring the stick so to speak. I believe it is theoretically possible to get perfect angles, but keeping it that way might be a challenge outside of a vacuum. As a thought experiment, if you take your arm, hold it straight, then bend it, for 1 picosecond or something, wouldn’t the angle of your arm be exactly 180.000~°, 90.000~°, etc, as it is bending?

The only reason cars are good right now is because countries like US and AU went 100% all in on cars. Do you have any idea the astronomical cost of public roads and car infrastructure? Imagine if we invested the same amount into a really really good train and tram system. Or, alternatively, imagine if we underfunded roads the same way we do public transport.

That makes sense. I kind of just assume everyone can find out my identity if they try hard enough. So my infosec is as if I’m speaking to a stranger on a nearby train. They could probably follow me home but I don’t give them a reason to and I don’t say anything incriminating.

I kept getting shadow banned constantly. My comments ending up with 1 view no up or down votes. For completely arbitrary reasons as well. And I got completely banned from a few communities by accidentally using extremist terminology (?).

And yes I don’t doubt they removed it for a reason, it makes it a much less friendly place. Like you’re putting down and directly affecting the other person rather than just disagreeing. It’s hard to explain.

Lemmy has this feature which is really nice… -20 points doesn’t show +20 and -40. It mentally feels a lot better to know that 20 people agreed with you even if more people disagreed
