I think people are reading until the last part of the sentence too much.
I would think there are plenty of women interested in such a man at this point.
The only note I think can lead to an outlook like this is the feeling that if someone has never made bad mistakes (eg, developing an addiction, falling in with a bad crowd) they don’t develop an interesting story. I could imagine being a woman and meeting a lukewarm balding guy who says “I’ve responsibly maintained my 401k and am ready to consider children” and just feeling uninspired.
So people at least need some vein of uniqueness to their existence.
I mean, to play devils advocate, in our societies this scene could be seen as how life treats anyone who’s not powerful, so technically it would apoly to this case, but if it applies to a lot of other cases for the same reasons, there’s no point in singling this one out.
Why do those men even live? Free them out of their misery with face pounding!
