Only if you’re scared of people and of developing actually deep and fulfilling connections. And I say that as a very satisfied “cat dad”!

This is basically asking a parent why they pick their children over someone else. Is there anyone you’d value higher than your children?

God. Just like I value people more than pets. Animals are not children, even if we talk about them in that way.

For me my two cats are my adopted children. And there is absolutely nothing I wouldn’t do about them. Yes, they are not human, so what? I love them more than anything, more than myself, they are my everything.

Also, to clarify, I never said I value people more than pets. What I said is that I value my family more than anything. And my cats are my family.

Hell yeah. My husband and I have the best holidays because it’s just us and our cats. No drama, no stress. Kinda like what a holiday should be.

Can’t help but agree with that, except I replace cats with my siblings. Cutting contact can be among the best things to do for one’s metal health.

Sibling kinship can be pretty pretty based. They often know and agree what’s up

I do miss my mom, but then I remember her doubling down on being a conservative despite her gay son having nearly been killed in 1999 for coming out in HS. You can’t argue with stupid, and you can’t indulge it either.

Both my wife’s and my fathers died within a year of each other. Christmas is just us and moms now and it’s… a lot better. Good food and no drama.

Column B for me. Yeah, when I think about it too much it stings but so much better than anxiously hoping things go well and consistently blowing up in my face.

Choose peace on the holidays. Set boundaries and walk away if boundaries are ignored.

Thanksgiving is generally me, husband, twin. Twin works on Thanksgiving (hopefully, cause it’s extra pay) so I’ll make a turkey, mashed taters, rolls. It’s much calmer than the holidays we spend with mother and her new family.

Take the next step and remove yourself from holiday traditions. I only observe the solstice/equinox dates.

I love to celebrate good food with the friends and family I care deeply about, and I love seeing them happy. There’s people who arent worth it, like the OP no-contact can be the best choice and there’s swaths of my family I don’t talk to, but throwing the baby out with the bathwater here just makes life less full.

You don’t have to make holidays into whatever that is. My holidays are relaxing opportunity to meet friends who aren’t busy with work, that’s basically it. I discovered you don’t actually need to Buy Product ™ to have a holiday.
