Both Russians in Hollywood movies and Russians according to stereotypes refer to 1990s, when the Soviet economy was destroyed and engineers, researchers and teachers had to go sell stuff at the markets or become criminals.
It is interesting how Hollywood and stereotypes love imagining that Russia is still living in the 1990s.
