Hair metal band, Twisted Sister with frontman Dee Snyder
I can hear this picture…
is true … but alas every generation makes it worse.
Am Gen x, 30 years ago I assumed that when the old boomers died off things would be better as we took over. Now Im left watching horrified as Gen X just helps make it even worse and I hear Gen Z repeating the same inane missives my gen did at an early age.
It’s the thing that moved me from a slightly right of center 20yr old to a left green supporter here in Australia at 58. More of the same stupidity won’t do anything but make it worse.
We didn’t start the Fire (boomer Joel song) might be true but we’re making it worse by just pouring more fuel on said fire.
Narrator: they did in fact take it.
On the electoral side, people are starting to not take it… Anymore.
Just gotta hope it is enough to outweigh the fear mongering of the right and liberals.
Imagine treating liberals like enemies and not as the friends in power that they are.
which liberals?
plenty of liberals are 100% on board with the conservative agenda, as long as the stock market goes up.
Plenty of leftists are good with the conservative agenda as long as Russia gets to keep genociding Ukraine.
Anyone who supports genocide is not a leftist, like, by definition.
Economy policy has nothing to do with supporting genocide or not.
Haaaaaaaaave you read some stuff written by leftists?
Crazy, go ask a .mler about Stalin or Mao - then look into just how much of their rhetoric the DSA co-opts.
Spoilers: it’s not lookin good
There’s whole instances here that would disagree with that statement.
What definition do you use?
lol. As an anarchist, they are deffo also the enemy.
Not everywhere is a two party state and the difference between Liberal and left is a lot more obvious when you’re outside of the American media sphere
The american media sphere is the greatest sphere in the galaxy.
Even knowing this is a bit makes me recoil lol
It’s not a ‘bit’ to love your country.
I don’t think all liberals are enemies, but I do acknowledge the reality that certain Democratic liberals in power are attacking progressives and lending crediance to right-wing attacks.

We’ll see if the same tactics used to win NYC work in rural counties.
Here’s to hoping!
The tightness of Abdul’s primary kinda has me worried. Apparently, there was an amount of Republicans who signed into the open Democratic primary to try to tank his chances. I don’t think we have the numbers for how many yet, but it will be concerning if it is only a small portion.
A bunch of interviews have shown that a lot of the people who voted for Trump just wanted a change candidate, who ended up doing the opposite of delivering. Hopefully those people will come out swinging for change candidates of the opposite flavor.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the republicans voted for him knowing he’d be the easier target to defeat.
Much the same as Trump wanting to run against Sanders every election.
Current evidence says otherwise in regards to who the ‘weaker’ candidate is, but that doesn’t mean the fearmongering won’t activate enough R voters in the general to out vote the progressive’s momentum.
Echelon Insights suggested that Republican-leaning voters may have helped Stevens in the Detroit metro area.
I guess we will see. :)
Spoiler alert, we continued to take it.
Getting old is watching all your former ‘rebel’ friends become the Empire.
And worse, watching your former empire friends, seem more like the rebels.
and then realizing they’re all assholes and none of them really care about anyone other than themselves and this movie was fun, but a horrible horrible way to view the world.
The real struggle is going on at your local town/neighborhood meeting and voting for the city rep you have never heard of is the one making the biggest impact on your life.
The genius of Mandami, that everybody ignores, is he is entire focused on small potatoes local issues that actually effect the voters lives. But in america, filling pot holes and auditing/moving budget items for more pragmatic spending, makes you a communist, or something. Real change is in the boring details, not the grand historical narrative.
I just read that Mandani got an email that a citizen needed a pothole fixed on the road they lived on.
Same day filled.
In a city that has roughly 15 million people. One citizen. One pothole. One email. Filled SAME DAY. For context, the state of Ohio has about 11 million citizens.
If I were to write that same letter to a Cleveland mayor, that pothole most likely would never get fixed. My dad has lived in the same house since 1973. His house is at the center of a T intersection. Meaning the road ends, and you need to turn left or right. If you drive straight instead, you’re driving onto his lawn.
In the 70s/80s/90s he had a guardrail. If you drive straight, you crash. Then in 1998 they had to dig up some pipe and do some work down there. They removed the guardrail because they needed more space. They didn’t replace it.
Despite hundreds of calls over the years, to this day that guardrail is not replaced. 1998-2026. No action through multiple mayors, including Frank Jackson who served 17 years while doing absolutely nothing. Seriously, when I think what was Obamas contribution, I say medicare. With Clinton I think the telecommunications act of 1996. With Frank Jackson, I could be convinced he just stayed in his room and played Nintendo all day every day for 17 years.
But Mamdani replaces 1 pothole from 1 email, same day.
I’m not sure words can fully capture the amazement, and dumbfounding I feel when I think of that.
Spoiler,: Those who didn’t take it, died…
Only one generation believed that the boys would be back in town (spoiler: they were)
Dee Snyder gave my third favorite testimony in front of a Senate committee ever where he accused Tipper Gore of being a sexual deviant.
#1 is Fred Rogers securing funding for PBS and #2 is Bob Denver breaking Al Gore’s heart and leaving early for a meeting with NASA
I guarantee Dee Snider didn’t think that.
When I was a kid, I didn’t understand a lot. Everytime I asked a question, the adults in the room would say “you’ll understand when you’re older”.
Ok. It’s been like 38 years…I still don’t understand.
What exactly is Dee Snyder supposed to be with this look??? If this look were invented today, I would think he’s mocking trans people. But this was the mid 80s. I never in my life heard the term “trans” until maybe 2010. So in 1985, they weren’t a focal point of society. If they existed at all they were very rare. Not well known enough for an anti trans image to make sense in 1985.
So, what is he supposed to be with this look? A caveman??? A manniquinn??? I have no idea what I’m he’s going for here.
To emphasize the “Twisted Sister” image, Snider adopted a trademark persona of metal-inspired drag with long blond curly hair, an excessive amount of eye shadow and rouge, a beauty mark, and bright red lipstick.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dee_Snider
so I guess it was to look like a “twisted sister”?
I guess that makes sense when it’s explained like that.
But a million guesses, and I never would have got that right.
I mean it’s hair metal and gender bending. Nothing about that is transphobic.
Look up talk shows like donahue. Tons of discussing trans people and their issues and place in society during the 80s and 90s. You can find episodes on YouTube. You get a good look at where people were at then.
“Network”, (1976 - Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway) says it all better than anything
Side note: This stripped back version is pretty good.
To paraphrase a commenter under that video; If you told me in 1985 that this song would bring a tear to my eye in 2026, I would have laughed at you, but here we are.
I know, right? I’ve watched it several times, and it still got me when I watched it again when I posted that.
Every single generation in the past 100 years has said the same thing. “My generation will fix it when we’re in charge”.
The God Damn boomers were the hippies from the 60s. What the fuck happened to peace and love?
My generation (Gen X), my goodness, we could see through all the bullshit. We’re the original centrists.
Every single one of my children’s Gen Z friends are all so woke they never sleep.
Turns out every generation is full of selfish shortsighted dumbasses just like the one before it. Just like “The Greatest Generation”. Just like the boomers. Just like Gen X.
Faith in humanity…fading
Boo no copy pasted comments please
Lemmy is still very small and we hear you!
Wow…I don’t usually do that but it was so convenient. I feel seent.
And, every generation demanding we vote for the lesser of two evils as if that isn’t what every generation before did, like that’s going to fix it.
Apparently Gen X wasn’t going to take taxation anymore, so they made sure to abolish taxes for the top 1%.
That’s a boomer thing, but nice try.
Boomers have been voting for a
centuryabout 64 years, the thing that changed in the 80s and 90s were Gen X coming of age.
Boomers have been voting for a century
Unless there is a statistically-significant amount of 118+ year old people actively voting, this is not possible.
Not just that, but had to be born after 1945 to be considered “Boomer”. Clearly time travelers
Not sure who downvoted you. You are correct. I feel like the term “boomer” has lost all meaning. Now people just use it to mean anything from “old person” to “out of touch person”. The problem with that is, by that definition, all these Gen-Z people using the term like that, will all eventually be boomers. Which by definition would NEVER actually be true.
The boomers were born boomers. Gen-X and Millenials had to endure the boomers bullshit for 60 years before Gen-Z was ever born. We FULLY understand why you’d want to bully boomers. They frankly deserve it. But Gen-Z has lost all sight of WHY the boomers deserve shit. They’re just using the term boomer for anyone, of any age, that they want to insult.
I saw a 15 year old call a 25 year old a boomer.
At that point, the word has lost all meaning. I should just go around, insulting people by calling them a fish. No context. I’m going to strip the word fish of all meaning. No longer does it have anything to do with fins, or gills, or being underwater. If you make me mad, you’re a fish!
So, to anyone unfirmiliar with the word, boomer is shorthand for baby boomer. Essentially in WWII, hitler was trying to take over the world. So we sent all the men overseas to go kill the germans. When the soldiers got back, after not seeing their high school sweetheart for 4 years, they wanted to fuuuuuuuuck. And suddenly you get this massive wave of new babys. A boom rise in the amount of babys born between 1945-1965. A real…baby boom.
So these boomers in 1946 were still boomers, but also 1 year old. Yes, I AM using the term boomer correctly, to describe an infant baby as a boomer, as long as that baby is a baby between 1945-1965. They are both an infant, and a boomer at the same time. While it has nothing to do with being disconnected from reality.
Language is stupid when we just hijack words to make them whatever we want.
Since young novelists like yourself feel so strongly I’ve decided to add the edit. Happy now?
Semantics
He is technically correct, the best kind of correct!
That’s basically when the first genx kids “came of age”, most were still kids. Find another reason for the data, you’re causating the correlation.
Crazy thought, maybe some other people stopped voting?
And literal children made up the difference? 🤦♂️
No, more boomers.
That’s when it started, yes, but things haven’t gotten better as their share of the voters increased.
Other things that have changed in the same time frame is the explosive growth of Reich wing broadcasting. Rush Limbaugh and the like coming to reach millions of people and then the birth of fox news. That has made things much worse in the last 40ish years
Everybody’s the result of the environment they were raised in, but that doesn’t justify a single thing.
I’m not seeking to justify their actions, but explain why the change seems to have happened around that time. I’m not convinced it’s totally on gen X to have that sudden change, but more that the entire population was affected by the explosion of propaganda
Oldest boomers turn 80 in 2026. Some boomers aren’t even 64 years old yet as generation ends in 1964. Voting age was 21 before the 26th amendment was adopted in 1970. Almost no boomers have been voting for 64 years.
I think most people would agree Boomers are 1945 to 1960 and after that is Gen X
I just want to show society what people born after 1960 think about things… We’re sick of stupid labels, we’re sick of being marginalized in lousy jobs, and we’re tired of hearing about ourselves from others — Coupland, Boston Globe, 1991
Douglas Coupland agrees with you
And, here it is. We’re bickering amongst ourselves again, just like they prompt us to.
It’s a class war, try not to forget that.
indeed, in the thread about a hospitals closure from Medicaid cuts and a few protestors outside with signs being cursed at by passers by that we yelling can’t afford it
Apparently $400Million on a ballroom band tomahawks on Iran doesn’t highlight there is plenty of money , its just not for you.
It’s a class war, sure, but voters have power and a lot of them betrayed their class and continue to betray.
