I wouldn’t consider Ukraine to directly be imperialist, just a dog of imperialism. They are trying to subjugate the Donbass region, but that’s not really imperialism outright as far as I know.
Yeah i could get that, like ukraine’s role in expanding nato but like you said Ukrainian imperialism doesnt really fit. More like aiding american imperialism at the most.
Long story short, in 2014 a Banderite faction coup’d Yanukovych, who the Donbass region largely supported:
After the coup, much of the Donbass region seceded, forming the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. They’ve been at war with Kiev for over a decade, and requested millitary aid from the Russian Federation in 2022, leading to the current stage of the war.
Not trying to “sealion” or anything, just genuinely curious. Is it undisputed that Yanukovych had majority support in Donbas? I’m doing some more research now. Are you saying the Maidan Uprising was overblown or unrepresentative of common opinion?
Edit: and “coup” feels loaded. Not disputing but I would like further explanation if you can.
It’s pretty undisputed that Yanukovych was supported by the Donbass heavily. Euromaidan was western-backed, involved the Maidan Massacre, which seems to have been a false flag based on investigation, and was supoorted largely by the far-right. The reason Yanukovych went with the Russian loan, and not the IMF loan, was because the IMF loan came with stipulations like requiring austerity politics, shrinking social safety nets, and more, while the Russian loan did not. Then, he was coup’d.
Among the west, since the war is so heavily supported in the media, you really won’t see much on this post-2022, but pre-2022 the post-2014 Ukraine regime’s gangsterism was reported on pretty heavily by outlets like the New York Times, even. It’s only during the present war stage that this has really almost disappeared from western memory.
Same question, i get ukraine has its issues but idk how imperialism could be one of em🤔
OP got any knowledge to drop or is this bullshit? @jackeroni@lemmy.ml

Would you mind going into a bit more detail please?

sci-hub.se seems to be down? .su, .red, .box, and .ru are alternatives (that work for me, .st doesn’t).
There is also SciDB (but it can be much slower)
Thanks!
Western backed isn’t inherently a bad thing, far-right is of course, but your link is 404ing for me
Try this one. The fact that the west backed it is pretty damning for it to not have been a genuine “pro-democracy” movement.
Is it that damming? It’s not like the other side didn’t have heavy outside influence as well?
