Besides all the politics and the polarisation in society, normal life still goes on with all it’s individueal joys and sadnesses. Yes that is true. I did not make that distinction. Lemmy.ml isn’t a bad place. But if someone says “capitalism is a good system” or even soemthing like “I like the idea of communism, but not how its implemented” and gets downvoted into oblivion, it discourages them to speak their mind. Eventually you’ll get segregated communities with only one kind of opinion, an echo chamber.

That isn’t bad perse. If you want to make memes with only likeminded people, or if you want to have in-depth discussions about the things you like, that’s a good thing. That’s the power of the fediverse. The problem is that by all intents and purposes, lemmy.ml is the default instance for people that want to join lemmy. So that “segregated community” with the specific ideologies and the downvotes will be their first impression of lemmy.

Those aren’t typically risky media. When you’re downloading games though, you’re downloading executable programs. You can do some serious damage if you execute the wrong things. You’re not executing a mkv or a pdf, you’re only reading it.
