I vaguely know what an instance is, but let me see if I can get this straight.
So an instance in the Fediverse is a website hosted either on a web hosting service, right? So it’s like if I wanted to start one, it’d be similar to starting an old fashion forum like phpBB? I’d buy a domain, get a webhosting service, and install the software?
And the communities are analogous to sub forums? Except instead of me creating them, the users on my forum would create them?

Yep that’s basically it
I might start one then. I ran a couple of forums back in the 2000s. They were more barren than the Saharan desert, but I did it.
