The joke here is that it’s a special wand that can only do one spell,

Its a cast on touch, not on target spell. Hope your healer has precasted a healing spell.
Yes, the wand can cast “on touch” spells, but “on self” spells are somewhat more common with that model.
Edit: In an emergency, the wand can also be cast on a target, assuming the mage has enough arm strength.

so it’s like a Witching Rod, if you’re lucky you’ll get a gusher too
it’s a wand that can only do certain types of magic – mostly the flushed/out-of-breath kind.
