Apparently pre-rinsing confuses the dishwasher or something. Not doing it leaves me with residue all over the other dishes though 🤷

It doesn’t have to, just put a heatig element in it. Most dishwasher I’ve seen only hook up to cold water, so running the tap is not going to do anything.
It’s a US thing, our dishwashers get hooked up to hot water, since on a 120V 15A circuit you can’t heat all the water that fast.
