Apparently pre-rinsing confuses the dishwasher or something. Not doing it leaves me with residue all over the other dishes though 🤷

would make things more complicated - you now have to add an extra pathway from the waterline directly to the drain with an extra thermal sensor, or else you flush the pre-wash detergent down the drain.
