There’s two sides to that that Lemmy won’t ever get.
There’s the equality side of me who says everyone should live on a planet that isn’t warming and we should do everything we can to stop it, which is why I’ve removed all but one fossil fuel use from my life.
The other side has a family I need to keep safe, which is why I overhauled our HVAC system to handle the higher temps.
first time I have heard this. wonderful phrase. i miss math class. mathematics keeps you honest and humble, probably why people are so pathologically avoidant of it.
It felt appropriate, seeing how so much discourse here is more or less exclusively classroom theory discussion that almost totally ignores the actual reality.
I remember once telling someone that there is more to life than 101 coursework, and they called me an elitist and a fascist.
i sometimes wonder how these folks graduated college, but then i remember they probably just did the bare minimum and they tend to rant about how unfair and cruel it was they had to do coursework while ‘everyone else got to have fun’.
and they will scream at you to ‘cite your sources’ and if you do… they simple say ‘no not sources like that, those aren’t real’. when it’s like … Census data.
it is nice to think that way, and I do vote that way and try to be the best human I can. However I think you’re right, it’s idealism vs realism.
That’s me buying and upgrading our cooling HVAC to prep for hotter summers, but also making it a heat pump so I don’t need to burn gas anymore. It’s also my recycling and reducing consumption even though I know I’m one person in a vast sea. I try to follow Nemik’s words from Andor: “Try”. What most people refuse to do at all is to try to improve our world, as long as you’re trying, you’re doing more than the vast majority.

who are totally allergic to the notion that reality is limited and people are finite. because everything is perfect and infinite in our heads.

I’m guessing a significant portion are either currently still in college and/or otherwise live in very privileged bubbles.

the problem is people use their idealism to justify violence and hatred against others. especially on lemmy.
