      If 2 suddenly drops slightly to the side, 1 will begin to plummet almost immediately and not many people have trained for that at the range.

      If 1 is a bad shot and hits 2 non-lethally (or misses entirely), then 1 might be the only one who dies.

      Or if 1 hesitates and 2 just steps off of the board.

    Does guy 2 cleverly scream “oh my god what is that” and point behind guy 1 then step off the board when 1 is distracted? Guy 1 dies first.

    Then guy 2 survives and goes home to his family, struggling with the guilt of taking a life, even in self defence. Months then years go by, the guilt gnawing at him, wondering if he could have done something to save both of them. He never focuses on the present, locked on those few seconds in the now distant past. His partner feels abandoned by his constant pondering, his friends tire of endlessly rehashing the same scenario. Eventually he is left alone, just like on that cliff that day. He goes back to close the loop. He steps off the cliff and as he falls, everything comes together. He sees that he’s not responsible for guy 1’s violent choices and for taking reasonable action in self defence, even if it did cost a life. He sees that his constant worry and being trapped in that moment effectively ended the life that he saved that day. He wishes he’d taken his partner’s advice and gone to PTSD counseling. He wishes-
