Hell, they’ll give you this look even when you say you like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and of all bands - Motorhead.

People have particular subgenres of taste, but who the hell decided at one point that we should evaluate what is metal and what isn’t?

I have given bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death and sprinkles of other Death/Black metal bands honest tries. To me it’s all just noise and the vocalist guarantees me that I will not like them because it’s just belching and barking lyrics.

who the hell decided what is metal and what isn’t?

I recommend freeing oneself from the chains of genre altogether.

Humans have a tendency to turn descriptive language into prescriptive language. So what started as artists experimenting ends up getting categorized into market demographics that are easier to sell to. Separate communities who, in order to exist at all, need to create rules about who does, and thus who does not, belong. And so what starts as free artistic expression reflects off of the audience and becomes economic and social pressure to conform to these rules. We end up with bands making “metal” music for the sake of being metal, at the cost of true artistic expression.

Is an artist metal? Is an album metal? Is a song metal? Is a particular instrument in a song metal? Is a particular bar played by a particular instrument metal? Is it even about the music, or is it about other things? The clothes, the color schemes, the fonts, the lyrical subject matter, the community? Does any of it actually matter?

Thank you, this needed saying! It would be nice if we could return to just playing music without worrying at all what genre it is.

It’s only metal if I like it, anything heavier is just noise, anything softer is poser

Maybe jealousy? They cracked the mold when they popped Lemmy🍰 out. Now the metals are left with only like 2-3 to choose from.

Foe me it’s the opposite. I absolutely love cannibal corps. I love cannabis corpse even more. I always feel like these bands make tge music tgey really want and not what people want to hear. There is something honest about the music. If you don’t like it you fon’t like it, obviously. Maiden acdc and megadeth is really boring to me. It’s not that it’s bad or i don’t like it, it’s more that i think: i could listen to worm sheppard or job for a cowboy instead. One of my favourite bands is all shall perish, i liked them before ever seeing them live, but when i saw them i truly realised that these are massive music nerds. His vocal range is crazy, because i assumed they had two singers, the bassist and guitarist seem incredibly talented, and i think they could be really successful doing “good music” but that’s what they do and enjoy and i appreciate that a lot.
