Of course most of the events I’m interested in are broadcast at ridiculous times of day, which makes sense given the time difference. Does anyone know where a guy might find recordings, or at least a livestream? FMHY has lots of TV links, I’m sure I’ll be able to find some stuff there, but I’m hopeful that somebody more intelligent than I am is also interested and has a better plan than I do.

Sidenote: what events are y’all looking forward to? I’m excited about Ski Mountaineering, and I think there’s a Freeride Ski event as well!

Edit: I understand that some folks have strong opinions about the Olympics, and that’s alright. However, I wasn’t asking for your opinion on the event in a political manner, and outside of “what events are you looking forward to?” did not ask for any opinion whatsoever. I am interested in watching them, and am looking for the best ways to do so without paying. That doesn’t effect you, and frankly your opinion of the event is unwelcome and irrelevant to the conversation at hand.

If you want to have a discussion about all of the ills involved with the Olympics, make a thread about that, in a relevant community. I agree with a lot of the negative opinions about the Games and would happily engage in that conversation in the appropriate context. This thread is about where those of us who do chose to watch may do so. Thank you in advance for stowing your opinion.

Another Edit: regarding representing your nation, that isn’t incorrect, but also absolutely minimizes that making it to the Olympics is the height of athletic achievement and many of the athletes dedicated their entire lives in order to reach that point. And you’re shitting on that from behind a computer. Younger me was a very competitive skier, I nearly went to college explicitly for ski racing. So I have in that regard a pretty deep understanding of the level of commitment it takes to go beyond that level. It’s nothing to snear at and say “well your president/PM/government is bad so you’re as guilty as they are” and doing so reflects more on you than the athlete.

Turning my eyes to events not marred by corruption and idiocy. So definitely not the Olympics.

    I don’t fucking care.

It’s just one big event to see how much commercialization can be crammed down people’s throats. The Commercial Bowl isn’t too far away either.

I’m always a bit fascinated that people do care. Even when i was a child and there wasn’t that much entertainment around, i would sometimes go to a friend’s house on a sunday and they would all sit in front of the tv and watch ski racing or some obscure sport and be super involved. Sometimes i watched with them and it was just barely better than watching the tv while ir was off.

I will glance proudly at the TV, knowing my city dodged the biggest economic bullet that we probably ever faced. This was the Olympics that we would have been holding too. While I lament that our current Olympic facilities are decaying, I don’t at the same time think it was responsible to invite this organization (and all the chaos that they bring) back into our city. We can provide the funding for future infrastructure in other and more sustainable ways.

They are still participating in the name of the country they represent. That’s manufactured solidarity and they have the choice and by extension the voice to stand down on these platforms.

Exactly - the athletes represent their nations. No matter their genuine selfish reasons (money, fame, etc), they are endorsing their nations’ policies.

Beyond that, the IOC is corrupt and the Olympics is just another way to funnel money from the people to the elites.

Since you’re on lemmy.ca, are you Canadian?

If so, you can watch all the events on your own time through CBC Gem.

    https://gem.cbc.ca/section/olympics

    https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/olympic-broadcast-milan-cortina-2026-cbc-radio-canada-9.6957085

Audiences can watch on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service. Once launched, CBC’s website, cbc.ca/milanocortina2026, will offer full event schedules, results, highlights, athlete profiles daily updates and more.

For those in other countries, check who is broadcasting locally and you might be able to access it for free through official channels

I’m in the Northeast US, .CA is the physically closest server, and imo one of the more sane.

Would a VPN in Canada work for that? That’d be awesome.

Yes it will. a few years ago when the Tragically Hip played their last concert a couple of my friends in the US wanted to watch as the CBC was showing it for free. So I let them have access to my personal VPN on my server which is in Montreal.

You can get yourself a one-month iptv sub, and put ott on your android tv device, probably put you out 10 to 15 bucks. Most will have a dedicated olympics set of channels that rebroadcast events during USA prime time hours. Also maybe pick up a Peacock sub for a month and enjoy the show.

Yea, a subscription might be the easiest way. I would love a way to capture the video to my drive, is that the ott route? I don’t have an android tv box and have heard of it. IPTV is definitely a good suggestion that I hadn’t considered, do you have any recommendations?

There’s a great Android TV app called Tivimate. You can record shows to a hard drive attached to the Android box.

If you’re in the USA (or maybe Canada?), the Walmart Onn 4K is a very good device for the price ($30). The Nvidia Shield Pro ($200) is more premium. I have two of them.

The best IPTV services are secretive and require an invite from an existing user. The one I use hasn’t accepted new customers for a few years, so unfortunately I can’t refer you.

Walmart has a $20 Onn android box. Ott is the iptv app. Those cheap boxes only have a couple gigs of storage so recording is not really an option. As far as providers, I’ve used layer seven a few times with decent results. A couple web searches will turn up some good reviews of iptv providers.
