Maybe I try to host bad software, maybe I am just bad at computing but at this point I feel like I’m getting too old to constantly debug various issues. I just want certain things to work and I’m willing to pay the price for it 😮‍💨

None of those are hard technically. They’re just very essential and I rather enjoy my DNS working and email delivered at all times.

I trust my VPS provider more than a VPN. And I want a VPN primarily for privacy, not massive p2p bandwidth or the ability to circumvent geographical restrictions.

Also my seedbox can run 24/7 with the bandwidth capped and it doesn’t have any effect on my life.

If my home internet is uploading at full speed, streaming services start to stutter and that’s annoying.

not hating on a VPS for torrenting, but you fix that stutter by properly setting up priorities and bandwidth limits in your firewall.

If I had a symmetrical connection, I would do that.

But it’s like 1G down and something fucking pathetic up on a good day.

I tried and eventually succeeded, though it took ages to figure out where the configuration was wrong. It was something relatively stupid too, iirc. But I still don’t actively use it because I don’t have enough faith in its reliability to use for something as important as email, lol

alternately, you could try my self hosting method: something on my server doesn’t work -> nooo i need to fix everything on my server -> something on my server doesn’t work

Depends on what I’m hosting tbh. For most things I’m comfortable self hosting but after a brief spell of hosting my own email I gave that up and went to a paid service.
