eta: checked three domains, all still live.
ah but you see, the AI companies who made deals with AA to scrape their database get no repercussions!
So domain change?
A reminder also to boycott, as much as possible, those thirteen major publishers – most or all of which are stealing from academia:
APRESS MEDIA, LLC; CENGAGE LEARNING, INC.; ELSEVIER INC.; HACHETTE BOOK GROUP, INC.; HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS LLC; JOHN WILEY & SONS, INC.; MCGRAW HILL LLC; BEDFORD, FREEMAN & WORTH PUBLISHING GROUP, LLC D/B/A MACMILLAN LEARNING; MACMILLAN PUBLISHING GROUP, LLC; PEARSON EDUCATION, INC.; PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE LLC; SIMON AND SCHUSTER, LLC; AND TAYLOR & FRANCIS GROUP LLC
I would but unfortunately I was already pirating them.
… I legitimately did not know that nearly all of those are LLCs. Ridiculous.
the word “Global” in “Global Domain Takedown” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
The only domains taken down are going to be registrars that either fall in US juristiction, or voluntarily take it down. A US court order has no teeth outside of the US. I expect they are right in their response “we’re chill, we’re used to it.”. The operators are clearly not concerned about it, because at the end of the day it holds no bearing outside of the US and there are always going to be domains that don’t care about a US court order.
This court order is going to have an uphill battle in getting non-us juristictions to want to comply as well. I expect that they will be forced to go through local courts for it, but even then it’s hit or miss whether a non-us court is going to care about a us companies damages.
This court order is going to have an uphill battle in getting non-us juristictions to want to comply as well.
Doubly so, because the Trump Regime hasn’t exactly been building any kind of equity with the rest of the world. There’s no favors upon which they can draw anymore, especially when they’ve been actively trying to shit on and screw over virtually everyone.
So many people don’t understand soft power, or how much of it the US used to have. Now all they have is hard power, eg. sanctions and military action. And who would bother with either of those for a few tens of millions in fines? So now all the things America could do while saying cough USAID cough just aren’t going to happen without much more pressure, which oftentimes will simply not be worth it.
The US still has a lot of soft power, you shouldnt underestimate that. But it has vastly less than it did a decade ago, Trump has burnt through a huge amount.
I hardly doubt people behind AA is careless enough to leave traces of how to find them. They can shut down domains or hosting services, they’ll come back later. Just a little inconvenience.
